On to Carcross

Robert - Saturday, June 5
Another travel day. This time we went from Carmacks to Carcross, YT with a stop in Whitehorse. The only wildlife we saw today was a beaver. It was crossing the road in front of us. As it is small as compared to something like a bear, it was quite close when we spotted it. That meant we couldn’t get stopped in time to get a picture and it wasn’t waiting around. We stopped in Whitehorse for fuel and to get a few things we needed to replenish our larder. We parked in the Wal-mart parking lot and first went there. Then we got lunch at a close by restaurant. For picking a place we had no prior knowledge about, we did well. After lunch we dropped Connie and Leslie off at the grocery store and Stan and I headed back to get the trucks fueled. I unhitched to fuel as the station looked a little tight to get into and out of while towing. After we got fuel, Stan went back to the grocery store to pick up Connie and Leslie and I went to hook up. While hooking up who walks up but John (talltexan) and Glenda. They and the couple they were traveling with were hanging out in the parking lot waiting for their trucks to be serviced at the Ford garage. Soon Jim and Marlene, the couple they are traveling with walked up so I got a chance to meet them. They couldn’t wait around as they had to be back at the Ford garage so they left before Leslie, Stan, and Connie returned.
After everyone got back and we got hooked up we set out for Carcross. The town is a shortened version of caribou crossing. So time in the past (but no longer) the site of the town was on a major caribou route. The drive from Whitehorse was beautiful. I have always thought the most picturesque area in Alaska is right along the coast and Carcross is only about 60 miles inland from Skagway which is on the coast.
This shows the road from a pull out toward Carcross.

And here are a couple of vagabonds that were traveling that way.
