Carcross, Yukon Territory

Question: Why are so many towns named “CAR…” something – Answer: because they marked caribou crossings.  Caribou are herd animals who migrate each winter in search of food and shelter from the extreme winter weather. Carmacks is named after George Carmacks, the man who discovered gold in the Klondike.

We left Carmacks for Carcross, 160 miles to the south.  Enroute we passed through Whitehorse where we ran all the errands that you can accomplish more easily in a major town.

Familiar Alaska travelers may wonder about our route as we’re not taking the most direct route to Alaska.  We’re headed to Scagway first to get a small taste of the southeast coast.

The route from Whitehorse to Carcross is particularly beautiful.  The road travels along the Yukon River; in the distance are spectacular snow-capped mountains.  We stopped at Emerald Lake for some pictures:

The beautiful green color of the water is a result of low oxygen levels in the water.

We ended the day in Carcross, a common day trip for cruise ship passengers.
