Robert, Monday, August 4
We drove over to Soldotna today to visit the wildlife refuge. After checking out the visitor’s center, we took one of the hikes. It was to a lake and then through a forest. The trail was covered with wood chips that made it feel like walking on pillows. We hoped to see some wild life but we didn’t see anything. We did go out to eat dinner. We had a restaurant recommended to us at the visitor’s center but you never know when you are being sent to a dive. Well, this recommendation was great. We both ate king crab and it was one of the better meals we have had eating out in Alaska.

Eat At Louis' in Kenai
Leslie Monday, August 4, 2008
I spent some time today working on the AFS Sweden 1976 Reunion Cruise. I have to have all the final arrangement done by next weekend and I never know when we’ll have email and/or cell phone or not. While I’ve organized a number of functions professionally, I’ve never dealt with a cruise. There are always more details to address! This reunion cruise is a gathering of the group of AFS Foreign Exchange Students who went to Sweden for the 1975-76 school year. WE taking a 4 day cruise out of Los Angelos in October. There were 39 of us, about 30 from the US and the rest from other countries. Although we had nothing more than the student’s home address in 1975 to start with, after months of searching by many of us, we have found all but one student. The power of the internet and random connections is amazing. The missing student was from Thailand so we have additional language challenges in finding her. (We’ve been successful in Turkey, the Netherlands, Italy, Panama, Honduras, Brazil, and New Zealand.) If anyone knows Sunee Harntrakulyounyong, originally from Bangkok, Thailand, we’re still looking for her. Sunee would be around 50 now.
Late afternoon we headed for the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge, under the auspices of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, comprises most of the Kenai Peninsula. At the Visitor’s Center we gathered information for camping later in our trip. Tomorrow we’re headed to Homer but we’ll come back through this way. We did take a short hike in the refuge looking for moose or bear. Because the land is wetlands, the US F&WL Service has installed wonderful boardwalks and chipped bark paths. Walking on the chipped bark is almost like walking on cotton. It is so soft! – and great for my knees! We took the spotting scope, tripod, and attached camera hoping to see something along the lake. We weren’t lucky there. The hike was nice but no wildlife came out to greet us.
Yesterday when we went to Soldotna we stopped in the Visitor’s Center and asked about a place to eat good fish. The staff person told us that we should go (return) to Kenai to Louis’ Place in the Uptown Motel. I have to tell you that a recommendation for a restaurant in a motel just doesn’t give me a strong positive feeling. However, tonight we decided to check it out. Wow, were we surprised. The place was crowded with many locals (we knew that by eavesdropping on conversations). We each had an order of one pound King Crab legs, soup/salad, potato, and veggie. Since I decided to try the Clam Chowder (very good) first, there was no way for me to finish my dinner. (Boxes, please.) It was wonderful and perhaps the best dinner we have had on the road. We heartily recommend Louis’ Restaurant in the Uptown Inn in Kenai.
Tomorrow we head to Homer on the spit. We won't have WIFI at our site but will try to post from the library. We'll likely stay there for 3-6 days.
Sorry, no pictures today.
