Carmacks, Yukon Territory

Hotel and RV Park, Carmacks

We left Dawson City headed for Carmacks, back 220 miles along the Klondike Loop.  This portion of the road really could use considerable work, the constant bumps get tiring although the scenery never does.
When we drove this road north a few days ago we had observed a forest fire burning.  Today we saw numerous forest fires burning.  Our guess is that the fires were started by lightning because there appeared to be numerous separate fires.  One was particularly  smoky:

We were mildly concerned that the road could be closed.  As we drove you saw evidence of many, many prior fires.  Areas of forest were marked, “1965 Fire, 1970 Fire”, etc.  In some instances it was apparent that they must have closed the road because the trees on both sides were totally obliterated.

On our drive north it was raining when we reached several roadside lookout places.  Today we were fortunate and able to stop for pictures of the beautiful mountains.

We stopped at Five Finger Rapids:

With binoculars you can see ice along the shore.

And a close up of the rapids:

While at the lookout we met some local young men. They told us of canoeing the rapids.  Although the rapids don’t look too menacing, apparently they are quite fierce.  The safer route through is on the closer side of the island in this picture.

These rapids were a fierce obstacles to the gold seekers heading toward Dawson City.

We ended the day at Carmacks Hotel and RV Park located in the small village of Carmacks. The village appeared to  consist of the hotel and RV park, and a gas station/grocery/general hardware store.  We looked  through the grocery store.  The next time you complain about grocery prices consider this:  a 12 pack of Diet Coke cost $12.98!  Bananas cost over $5.00 a lb.  (We didn’t buy anything.)
