We visited the town of Carcross, currently the end point of the White Pass and Yukon Railway. The railroad is now used as a tourist train. It passes through the beautiful, rocky mountains from Scagway to Carcross.
The town of Carcross is little more than one street. It holds the train station, a general store (and ice cream shop), and several historic monuments.
At the train station museum I learned that the US Army leased the White Pass and Yukon railway during from October 1942 until the end of WWII. During the construction of the Alaskan Highway, the Army didn’t transport any civilian supplies of food making conditions extremely difficult for the Yukoners.
This train picked up tourist passengers for the return trip to Scagway. A ride on the train is pricy -- $178/one way.
The general store had an eclectic assortment of vintage items as well as some excellent books, toys and fur hats.
After our town visit, we drove a few miles north to the sand dunes known as Carcross Desert. Actually the area cannot technically be called a desert because there is too much moisture. The sand dunes are a result of a long gone glacier lake.
Walking in this sand is the same experience as walking on the beach.
