Moving to Homer

Robert, Tuesday, August 5
We drove to Homer today. Coming into town is a large hill that the road goes over. As we climbed the hill, we entered the overcast. It was so thick that we could barely see 100 feet in front of us. "Oh No!" I thought. Not only is it going to be overcast but foggy as well. Then as we descended it cleared and we had a good view of the town. It was still overcast though. The drive was only 90 miles from Kenai. The campground we selected is at the end of the spit. The spit is a narrow piece of land the extends from the town proper out into the bay. It is about 4 miles long and most of it is a little more than a hundred feet wide. Out campground is out at the very end. The campground has electric only so we filled up the fresh water tank when we got here. They do have a dump station that we can use when we leave. They have showers so we don’t expect to fill up any of the holding tanks. The first tank we normally fill is the grey tank that is for the shower and the bathroom sink. We normally fill its 50 gallons in 3 days, almost all from showers. The showers here are $1 each but without a time limit. Many campgrounds have showers that are 25 cents for 5 minutes. The problem with showers that take quarters is that just when you get your face covered with soap suds, the shower cuts off and you have to fumble for another quarter. After we got in the site, we took a walk. There are small shops, restaurants, and charter companies that line each side of the road for a half a mile. Somewhere I read the the road to Homer is the as far west as you can drive on a paved road in the US. After our walk we fixed dinner and crashed.
