Homer on the Spit

Leslie Tuesday, August 5, 2008

We drove today from Kenai to Homer along the most western paved road in the US. The road is fine by the way. It’s less than 100 miles from Kenai to Homer so the drive was reasonable.

You can see the spit on the first map. The second map gives the orientation within the state.

As we came down a hill coming in to Homer I took this picture out the front windshield. The picture shows the Homer Spit.

Based on recommendations from our on-line friends Jo & Fred, we’re staying in a campground out at the end of the spit. Here’s the view out of rear picture window.

Our campground is at the end of the boardwalk area so it was easy for us to walk to the shopping district.

In addition to some small shops there are many fish charters. Because it was early evening, the charters were hanging and cleaning fish. See some very large fish:

Homer is known as the halibut capital of the world.

After a late dinner I took a walk on the beach. It was around 10:00 pm and the fading light was really pretty.

Below our campsite someone had created this beach art from colored stones.

The upper part of the beach is covered in very smooth rocks. The tide is over 15 ft. so there is a long sand bar when the tide is out. I did check out the water temperature – it’s cold! We haven’t seen anyone attempting to swim. I read somewhere that the water temperature rarely gets above 45 degrees.

Lots of people had campfires on the beach. We may do that tomorrow night.
