Back to Glennallen

Robert, Tuesday, July 22

It continued raining all night and was still raining as we packed everything to go back to Glennallen. The temperature this morning was 48 F. In the rain, that is cold. It’s hard to believe that it’s so cold in the middle of summer. We left the campground right at 10:00 a.m. As we were leaving town, I was checking the fuel gauges. Based on my memory, we should have had a full main tank (30 gallons) and a partial auxiliary tank (10 gallons). We didn’t want to buy fuel in Valdez as the price was $5.639 per gallon! The fuel gauge indicated that we only had about 20 gallons total. Thinking maybe I had used the main tank and just forgotten, we turned around and headed back into town. For the first time ever, I pulled the rig into a service station. Always before, I have gotten fuel after we have unhooked. As I would be comfortable with having the main tank full, I added fuel to it. It took two gallons with me forcing it. When I checked the fuel gauge, it now showed the tank was full (30 gallons). So much for accurate fuel gauges. We once again headed out of town in the rain. While the road between Glennallen and Valdez is very scenic, we had low clouds and rain and that rendered it just another road. Once we got over the pass north of Valdez the weather improved steadily until the rain stopped and we saw some blue sky. We stopped to get a few things at a grocery store and drove the remaining 15 miles to the campground. Once again we got our favorite campsite. I took a nap while Leslie work on her computer. It was nice enough that I got the grill out for supper. After that we had a campfire. It was pretty cool (52 F) but NO RAIN! There was a nice breeze and I’m not sure if it was the temperature or the breeze but we had no mosquitoes.
