Caribou RV Park
We’ve spent two days visiting Whitehorse, capital of the Yukon Territory. Whitehorse was a major transportation hub during the gold rush days. Today Whitehorse is a modern town that services as the resupply point for travelers heading north. We’re taken advantage of the resupply opportunities by visiting the grocery store and Walmart.
Today we were active tourists. We walked through downtown and admired the many murals painted on the side walls of numerous buildings.
We took a walking tour from the downtown Visitor’s Center. The tour focused mostly of old houses that had not yet been restored.
We did end up stopping for lunch in a restaurant that had exceptional Arctic Char (light fish, pink in color). That made my day!
After lunch we toured the SS Klondike.
The Klondike was a steam paddle driven ship that plied the movement of merchandise along the Yukon River, mostly north to Dawson City. The Klondike ran from 1929-1956 until a road was built to Dawson City. The river is iced-in for 7 months a year. The Klondike was the only source of mail and supplies to the people who lived there. Although used mostly to transport cargo, the Klondike did transport passengers. The decor is classic 1930s.

Wednesday we leave here for Dawson City (along the road). We’ll be driving the Klondike Highway for two days. This is a route we have not traveled previously and we aren’t sure what to expect in terms of internet access (or electricity for that matter).
