Today was a travel day from Whitehorse to a point halfway to Dawson City. After hooking up we set out a little way on the Alaska Highway and soon turned to go north on the Klondike Highway. To say that there is not much other than forest and lakes along this route is an understatement. After a way we passed a sign that said you are leaving the 911 call area. I think this means you are on your own from hereon. Along many miles are forests that have burned. There are signs that say things like, “Fire of 1998,” “Fire of 1984,” etc. After a while we also drove has a fire that was some distance from the highway. We could see flames but we could see lots of smoke and we saw a fire truck leave the highway on a side road. Along the way we saw a sow black bear with two cubs. Mom was black, one cub was black, and the other was golden. They hightailed for the woods before anyone could get a picture.
We had several places picked out for possible stopping places halfway between Whitehorse and Dawson City. The first was dry camping (no electric, water, sewer, or and other services). We passed that as it didn’t look all that great. The second choice, a few miles further on, wasn’t open. We decided to press on for another 2+ hours to Dawson City.
As it was now about 6:30, we went into town for supper. Leslie once again there was Arctic Char on the menu and that is what Leslie ordered. After dinner we came back to the campground.
