Spent the whole morning working on the tax protest. I needed to ask a few questions of the tax assessor before we wrapped it up. Once we got a couple of answers from the tax assessor’s office and we sent the protest via email, it was time to explore the signpost forest.
The forest started years ago when the Alaska Highway was being built. Some of the workers put up signs showing how far it was to their home towns. Well, the idea rook hold and now there are thousands of signs. It is hard to describe the variety of signs and it would take hundreds of pictures to do it justice. There are signs that appear to have been moved from the outskirts of many towns announcing the fact you are entering the town, there are signs with whimsical messages on them, there are signs in German, French, Dutch, and who knows what other languages. Here is one shot of the forest.
If there were 5,000 license plates when we got there, there are now 5,001. I still had the license plats we took off the car and trailer when we registered them in Texas. A few weeks ago I almost tossed them out but now one adorns the signpost forest.
After wandering around the signs for a while we ran a few errands like grocery store, post office, recycling centre, and gas station. We went to the Northern Lights Centre where they show a film of the northern lights. We got there a few minutes after 4:00 and the door was locked with a sign that said they closed at 4:00. As we were leaving, someone stuck their head out the door and said they would reopen at 6:00 and show the film at 7:00. We went back home, ate dinner, and returned for the show. They actually had two films; one of the northern lights and one of space.
After the show we returned home and sat outside, entertaining ourselves with bug zappers. These are things that look like tennis rackets. They have metal strings that are charged with high voltage. When you swing them and hit a flying bug like a fly or mosquito, you get a spark and a zap sound. We finally gave up and went to bed.
