North to Boston Bar, BC

Robert - We got up this morning to the best weather we have seen in weeks. The sky was blue, the sun was shining, and it was almost warm. We packed everything up and headed for Canada. The campground in Sumas was only 3 miles from the border crossing so we were there almost immediately. Approaching the border, the sign said cars straight ahead; trucks take the alternate route. Now I don’t know what anyone else thinks but given a choice between car and truck, I think we are driving a truck. We pulled up to the entry and there was no one there. I got out and walked over to where the cars were crossing. I asked how we would get across the border and I was told in no uncertain terms that the word “truck” means “commercial truck” only. Two years ago when we followed that rule, we bumped the pipe that was hanging down for the overhead clearance at a border crossing. It didn’t do any damage but I don’t want to hit some overhead barrier.

Anyway, I went in the building and was told that Leslie had to come in as well. I left my passport and went back to get Leslie. When we came back, we were asked where the guns were located. I am guessing that she ran my passport and got a hit on several handguns I had purchased ten or more years ago. We told her the guns were locked up in Colorado. She wanted to go look inside the trailer and we told her that Cody and Molly were loose inside so she allowed Leslie to accompany her back to the trailer to put them in their cases. Leslie returned to wait with me and the border agent came back in about ten minutes and said we were good to go. No questions about fresh produce, alcohol, or anything else.

The total distance we planned for today was 97 miles so it didn’t take too long to get to the campground. The route was very scenic with mountains above us and the Fraser River below. We pulled into the campground and were met by the manager and several people who were almost a welcoming committee. The campground is not very large (about 30 sites) and we were assigned a site up the hill. I started to pull into the site and quickly decided that (1) we wouldn’t fit in the site as it was too short and too narrow and (2) we would never be able to get out any way other than backing down a hill that we drove up to get to the site. So we had to back down a slippery hill with large trees on either side. Of course when we stopped trying to get into the site, we were at a 90 degree angle to the hill so we had to first make the corner. After we got back out of the first site we did get into one that is much wider and into which we did fit. It is very pretty with all of the trees.

Stan came over and said he had a check engine light so he needs to go back to Hope, BC where the closest Chevrolet dealer is located so he can get this checked. He first got the light yesterday but it went away when he made sure the fuel cap was tight. I guess we’ll be here until he gets it fixed.
