Robert, Saturday, August 2
It was cool and overcast again today but at least the winds had dropped to being tolerable. We walked to the open air market. It was almost all booths selling homemade jewelry with two exceptions. One was a booth selling a few vegetables and the other was a booth selling items made from local furs. I was attracted by a pair of fur mittens that were beautiful both to see and to feel. If I could have figured out what I would ever do with them I would have bought them. Let’s see: mushing the dog sled in -40 degree weather, hiking to the North Pole in the middle of winter, or sitting in a football stadium in Green Bay in a blizzard watching a football game. None of those seemed to fit so I passed on the mittens. Leslie on the other hand bought a pair of slippers like she wears around the house. The ones she owns now are worn out and bedraggled so she did have a reason to purchase them. And they were at least as cheap as those she has bought in the past. After that, we walked to a colorful Russian church that is located several blocks away from the campground. Then it was back to the trailer. She went out again to take some pictures and soon was back yelling, "Moose!" She had seen two moose close to the beach. Where we are camped is overlooking the beach but we are on a bluff and the water is a hundred yards from us. It is also 100 feet lower. Between the base of the bluff and the water there is a marshy area where she saw the moose. We have a spotting scope and a camera that attaches to it. She wanted me to set it up to get a picture. Well, putting it all together is a little like a puzzle and it took me 15 minutes to get it all out (including the tripod) and assembled. Of course by that time the moose were nowhere to be found. Now we have it all set up and ready to go which means we will never see another moose along the beach. I’m sure we will look for them again tomorrow
