Robert, Friday, August 1
We drove to Kenai today. To get here we had to drive toward Seward on the Seward Highway. This was the fifth time we have driven along this road and neither of us had any memory of it. On many of the roads we drive that we have driven in years past, we remember parts of the roads but not this one. A little bit north of Seward the highway splits with one part going to Seward and the other to Kenai. The campground that Leslie had picked out dropped the rate by 25% starting on August 1st as some fishing season ended yesterday and all of the fisher persons left town. The campground is right on the Cook Inlet. As we drove here, we got our hopes up that the weather would improve. The junction where the road splits is in the mountains and as we started to leave the mountains, suddenly we had blue sky and sunshine. It was great. But then as we got closer to the coast, the overcast returned. The campground was down right cool with a breeze blowing off of the water. We set out for the grocery store and stocked up. We got some fresh salmon but I told Leslie there was no way I was going to stand outside to grill it. We cooked and ate inside.
