Starting Week Five

Robert, Friday, June 13
Today started our fifth week on the road. So far we are having the time of our lives. I only thing I would change is that more than three days in some of these towns going up the southeast coast is a bit too long. On the other hand, the ferries run on their schedule and that means they don’t run every day to every town. I scheduled the ferries so that our trips were during the daytime. They do run 7/24 but we wanted to be able to see the scenery from the ferries. The result is that the schedule we have is the best we could do, given the constraints we imposed. Today started with overcast skies and by noon it was raining. Actually, the rain isn’t too bad. It is very light rather than a downpour and when it is raining, the mosquitoes don’t buzz around. We went to town to the library for its Wifi and then we went by one of the fish stores for fresh fish. The fish stores are actually commercial fish processing plants. In the back they clean and pack hundreds of pounds of fish. For those who are sport fishing, they will clean, pack, freeze, and ship their catch. They also buy hundreds of fish from the commercial fishing boats that they clean, pack, and freeze. And in the front, they sell fresh and frozen fish. One will even cook your fish for you. They also have a menu and a few tables where you can sit and eat fish. The one we went to rescued a salmon filet from the freezer for us. They had cleaned and packed it a few hours before and it wasn’t yet frozen. We took the fish back to the trailer, put it in the refrigerator and went exploring. Nothing too exciting but the scenery is beautiful. We have seen several black-tailed deer and Leslie wanted to get a picture of one–no luck. The deer are about the size of white-tailed deer. The only obvious difference is that they have a black tail. When we got back to the trailer, we decided to try our cell phone amplifier and external antenna. The service at the campground is just enough so that the phone doesn’t show "Searching for Service" but it is not enough to actually have service. When we hooked everything up, we had good service and almost immediately we got a voice mail that had been left the day before. While we don’t often need the amplifier and antenna, it works very well when we do need it. As it was raining, I didn’t want to set up the grill so we cooked it inside. In a word, it was excellent. We do like fresh fish!
