Williwaw National Forest Service Campground, Portage, AK
We’re spending three days “dry” camping in a wonderful national forest service campground just below the Portage Glacier. Williwaw has large sites in the trees but no water, electric, or sewer.

At the Portage Glacier Visitor’s Center we watched this ice burg floating.
In 2000 a one-lane railroad bridge was modified so that vehicular traffic can drive to the small coastal town of Whittier. The bridge is open to vehicles in each direction for 15 minutes of each hour. It’s a long, dark tunnel; I heard that it is the longest vehicle tunnel in North America. Vehicles just drive with their wheels outside of the railroad track.
We went to Whittier to find another wildlife watching sea cruise. While we wandered through the little town, we saw this rain deer being taken to work.
I overheard the woman telling the rain deer that they had to stop at the Post Office on the way. :-)
The rain deer worked as an attraction outside the woman’s craft shop.
We arranged to take a 6 hour wildlife cruise on Sunday. The weather was cold and rainy for our cruise, but we were able to view a group of sea otters:
And a group of Steller Sea Lions resting on a rock.
The destination of our cruise was Surprise Glacier. Despite the rain, we spent half an hour hovering under the overhang on the boat watching the glacier calve.
When the glacier calves, it sounds like a huge roar.
