Today’s drive took us from Tok to Destruction Bay. The road was in better condition than we remembered it from our northward drive on July 1st, but it was still pretty bad. I drove quite a bit and didn’t get over 30 miles per hour for most of the journey. It took us 7 ½ hours with two 30 minute stops to drive 227 miles. It was a long day...
Unlike the rain and clouds of July 1st, today the views were fantastic. The hills are awash in shades of yellow.
We stopped at a wildlife refuge near the border. We didn’t see any animals from the observation deck. They did have a large cache on display. The cache is where someone in the bush would store their meat for the winter. Notice it is very high to try to keep other animals from stealing the food.
Because the sun was shining, we got this picture of mirror lake, with a pretty reflection of the mountain colors on the water.
We saw several pairs of trumpter swans from a distance. Because the road is so narrow, unless we happen to be at a pull-off, it is not possible to stop for pictures.
We had hoped to stay at Cottonwood RV Park where we had stayed on the way north. Cottonwood is a pretty little park along the shore of Lake Kluhane. I tried calling for two days but their phone just rang and rang. We didn’t see any open RV parks from the border to Destruction Bay. Since it was getting late and we really wanted to find an electrical hook up, we stayed at Destruction Bay. The RV park is just a gravel lot along the highway. There wasn’t anyone in the office when we arrived around 7:00 pm, but the sign said to take a spot and settle up in the morning. We weren’t optimistic about the price because there wasn’t any indication of price on the sign. (That’s unusual.) The night was fine and the price was $31.50 plus tax. When we checked out the manager asked if we had seen the grizzly bear in the corner of the lot the night before. Unfortunately we missed that one.
