On the Road to Colorado

We drove to Tok today. It is about 200 miles southeast of Fairbanks. On the way here I pulled over at a roadside pullout and a cop blasted past with light and sirens going. He was going the same way as we. A little later we came to Delta Junction, which is about half way between Fairbanks and Tok. In the middle of the highway a guy was making it obvious that we had to make a left turn off the highway on a side street. I pulled into a parking lot and stopped while Leslie walked over to ask how we could proceed. I am always cautious about driving off on some little side road as it may not be passable due to things like a low overpass. The guy explained to Leslie that someone with a gun was in the gas station about 100 yards further on the highway and so we would have to detour. As it was lunch time, we just got in the trailer and fixed sandwiches for lunch. By the time we finished, the road was open so we just pulled out of the parking lot and continued. There were still cop cars all around the gas station. We got to the campground in Tok and got a spot. One of the things we wanted to check was how much the freezer warmed up when we had no power. With power it stays right at zero degrees. In the five hours we were driving it only warned up to 11 degrees. Given we almost never drive longer than that in any one day, we are satisfied that it will remain cold enough. I cooked dinner and we hoped that there would be enough leftovers for sandwiches tomorrow. It’s a maybe. After that we walked over to the main building for the campground where they have internet service. Tomorrow we cross the border into Canada so we might not have internet service for a while.
