Robert, Saturday, September 13
We both were really tired this morning so we both slept in. We finally got up, fixed lunch, got cleaned up, and headed into town to check out Dawson Creek. Our first stop was the visitor’s center. The woman there explained that many shops in the town were shut down for the season. We did pick up a map and a guide to a walking tour of down town. Leaving the truck at the visitor’s center we walked one block into town. It was a beautiful, sunny day and walking seemed the way to go, at least for me. Leslie was still complaining about how her legs hurt from her hike for help on Thursday. There are two mile post zero markers in town. The “main” one is right in the center of the downtown. It sets in the middle of an intersection. The walking tour is centered around this mile post. There are a lot of murals on the sides of buildings. They are actually quite well done. The town has a number of old buildings that contain shops and restaurants but most of them had a sign that read, “Closed Until Further Notice.” I think that meant until spring thaw. After the walking tour we walked to the original location of the mile post zero. The woman in the visitor’s center said the original marker was knocked down by a drunk driver. According to the walking tour booklet, the original marker was stolen as a Halloween prank and replaced with an outhouse. I like the replaced with an outhouse story better. After our tour, we stopped for some groceries and headed back home. As this was some of the best weather we have had on this entire trip, we set up the chairs and sat outside until it started to get cool. It was still nice enough that I cooked supper outside. We take the electric fry pan out and use one of the outside outlets. With that and the grill set on the picnic table, dinner is easy to cook out of doors.
