Robert, Saturday, September 6
We went into town today to look around. We saw the SS Yukon which was one of the last paddle wheelers on the Yukon River. It was built around 1930 to replace an identical boat that was sunk. This one was drug to its current location in the 1950s. It is now on dry land. We went on into town and walked around. Whitehorse is a nice small town but it doesn’t have a lot that caught our attention. We finally got fuel, a few groceries, and came back to the trailer. I looked for the northern lights again tonight but no luck. Before we left Fairbanks, I checked the milage from there to home. It is 3,000 miles. When we plan long trips, we use the rule of thumb of 100 miles a day. What we do in the short term is to drive something like 200 miles and then spend two days. Generally we don’t like to drive, spend one night, and drive again the next day. Spending three nights in Whitehorse is our “payback” for driving three consecutive days. Unfortunately, it looks like we will either have to drive more consecutive days or drive more like 300 miles for some days for the next several stops. Campgrounds seem to be closing around September 1 and there are some stretches where there isn’t much to see other than road and trees.
