Robert, Friday, August 8
Another beautiful day. We walked down to the end of the spit to see if we could get a picture of a rainbow, We didn’t get any rain and the rainbow was barely visible by the time we got to a place where we could get a picture without having all kinds of obstructions. Leslie walked to the fish store and bought a filet of halibut. Late in the afternoon it was so pretty outside that we got the outdoor recliners out and sat in the sunshine. It was cool but a real treat to be able to just sit in the sunshine. An RV pulled into the site right next to us. Soon the sole occupant came over and introduced himself. Tom said he was meeting some friends to go fishing tomorrow. Soon his friends showed up. At the back of the campsites are fire pits. Most are formed by circles of rocks from the beach. We wanted a campfire but I first asked our new neighbors as the wind was blowing so that any smoke and ash would blow right where they we sitting. They said they didn’t mind so I built a fire. As the wind was cool, soon everyone was gathered around the fire to stay warm. We grilled our halibut and ate inside. After that we went back to the campfire. Tom had told us about canned smoked salmon and one of his friends showed up with some. He said they made it by layering salmon filets in salt and brown sugar for 12 hours. Then they smoke the filets in a dry smoker for 12 hours. Finally they use a pressure cooker to can pieces of the salmon along with jalapeno and habanero hot peppers. We tried some of the results and it was excellent. Gradually the party broke up and we came inside. Leslie was cold and we hit the sack.
