Errands in Anchorage

Robert, Thursday, August 21

We had a million errands to run in Anchorage today. On the way into town it started raining. At first just a little, then more, then rain with small hail, then it cut loose and it was a downpour. One of the things we needed to go is to get fuel. If the station had not had a roof, I would have drowned with fueling up. As we left the station to continue on with the rest of our errands. The street had about 12 inches of water. There were several cars that were stalled in the middle of the street. Water was up to the bottom of the doors. It was like driving through an obstacle course to get through. In the middle of the street water was gushing up and it appeared that the water had blown the man hole cover off. You could see the water rising about six inches higher than the “pond” that was the rest of the street. I dodged that as I couldn’t tell if the man hole was open and if it was, I didn’t want to drop a wheel into that. We continued on with our errands and the rain finally stopped. By the time we finished everything, it was after 7:00 and we decided that going to the state fair was out. We got back to the trailer and Leslie fixed dinner. Then I crashed as we needed to pack up and move on the Telkeetna.
