Sunny Day!

Robert, Tuesday, June 17

Wow! Two sunny days in a row. We didn’t get up at the crack of dawn as it was almost 2:00 a.m. before we got to bed last night (actually this morning). But when we did get up, the sun was shining. Not a day to be wasted so we got up and got going. As we drove the 4 miles or so into town, I commented to Leslie that I thought that Sitka seemed cleaner and neater than many of the previous towns we had seen. She suggested that it might just be the fact that the sun was shining. Whatever it was, I soon decided that I liked Sitka. When we got to town, we parked and headed for the visitor center. We asked the woman there where we could find a Wifi hotspot. She looked back with a confused stare. We then asked where we could find a laundromat. Another confused stare. We asked where we could find the library. Libraries often have free Wifi. She did know that the library was next door about 50 feet away. Sometimes visitor information is good and sometimes you get blank stares. We did pick up an information sheet from the counter right in front of her that listed all of the laundromats in town. Given the bright, warm, sunny day we decided that things like internet and laundry could wait and we set out to explore the town. There was a big cruise ship anchored in the bay with lighters ferrying passengers to the town dock. We walked around a while and decided to eat lunch in one of the restaurants. Towns that get a lot of cruise ships have jewelry stores, gift shops, and places to sign up for the one hour tour of town galore but few restaurants. The reason is that your meals are all prepaid on the ship and you can eat as much as you want. We finally found a place to eat. We both had fish and chips and it was good but not great. After lunch we continued our exploration. Late in the afternoon we took a tour of the Russian Bishop’s house. Sitka was the Russian capital of Alaska and this is the place where Alaska was transferred from Russia the United States. When our legs finally gave out from walking, we found one of the fresh fish stores. I asked the woman there what fresh fish they had and she replied that they ONLY had king salmon. On Darn! We bought a pound, put it in our cooler and headed for the library and the internet. Finishing that it was back to the trailer for supper. Another great day.
